Panel Discussion: "Preserving African American Stories: Collaborations, Crowdsourcing, and How You Can Help."

Friday. September 15th 2017, from 5:30-7:15pm, at the Library of Virginia (800 East Broad Street, Richmond VA), there will be a panel discussion titled "Preserving African American Stories: Collaborations, Crowdsourcing, and How You Can Help." This event is an optional addition to “Virginia: Where African American Genealogy and History Begin," a conference to be held the following day. From the event description:

"Individual researchers, families, civic organizations, museums, and record keepers—physical and digital—all have a role in telling and preserving the rich and varied story of African Americans in Virginia and the nation. Panel members Gregg Kimball (director of Public Services & Outreach at the Library), Emily Schultz (with FamilySearch), and Selma Stewart (past president of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society) will discuss current efforts and model projects to advance our shared goals of accessibility, public engagement, and long-term record preservation with moderator Thom Reed of FamilySearch."

2nd Annual RVA Breastfeeding Symposium: the Intersection of Health, Race, Policy, and Practice

Friday, August 4th 2017, from 8am-4:30pm, at the Virginia Historical Society (428 North Boulevard, Richmond VA), the 2nd Annual RVA Breastfeeding Symposium will be held. This year's theme is "First Food: The Intersection of Health, Race, Policy, and Practice."

All Americans Summer Block Party at Diversity Richmond

Friday, July 28th, from 5:30-9:30pm, at Diversity Richmond (1407 Sherwood Avenue, Richmond VA), Richmond's LGBTQ community center is holding a summer block party celebrating community unity. The evening will feature karaoke (with cash prizes), food trucks, photobooth souvenir photos, and more. Proceeds go to support the programs of Diversity Richmond.

Free, open to the public. This event will be held rain or shine, and is indoor/outdoor (the event hall is air conditioned). There will be alcohol available for sale. If you'd like to volunteer, contact Rodney Lofton at rodney.lofton@diversityrichmond.org.

Announcing: Regular Saturday Open Hours at the Rag & Bones Bicycle Co-op

Starting May 6th 2017, the Rag & Bones Bicycle Co-op in Scott's Addition (3110 West Leigh Street, Richmond VA) will be holding regular Saturday open hours. Every Saturday, 10am-6pm. 

During these hours, the co-op is open to the public. You can go there to use their tools  for free and learn how to repair and tune up your bicycle from a knowledgeable volunteer. Rag & Bones is dedicated to providing a safe and inclusive space for all members of the community, and often opens its doors as a venue for political and community events.

Opening Day at the Birdhouse Farmer's Market

Tomorrow, May 2nd 2017, from 3-6:30pm, next to the Randolph Community Center Pool (1507 Grayland Avenue, Richmond VA), the Birdhouse Farmers Market is opening for the season. Check out their new website, at BirdhouseFarmersMarket.org, and stop by to meet their new vendors. Some new developments include: cooking demonstrations every other week, a weekly concert series (the Tiny Nest Concert Series- isn't that cute?), and more.

The market is convenient to VCU, Oregon Hill, Byrd Park, and the Fan, and runs every Tuesday from 3-6:30pm. SNAP EBT, credit/debit cards, and cash are accepted.

Full Heart Market at the Rag and Bones Bicycle Co-op

Tomorrow, February 12th 2017, from 6-9:30pm, at the Rag & Bones Bicycle Co-Op (3110 West Leigh Street, Richmond VA), the Rag & Bones Bicycle Co-op is holding their annual Full Heart Market. Wares from local artists and craftsmen will be on sale, there will be snacks, and DJ Julie Karr will provide music.

Rag & Bones is a local community DIY bike workshop space in Scott's Addition, and they're a frequent host for important political events. The venue is wheelchair accessible with a single-stall bathroom.

"Building Healthy Economies and Communities in the Age of Trump" with Anthony Flaccavento

Wednesday, February 22nd 2017, from 7-8:30pm, at the Main Branch Library (101 East Franklin Street, Richmond VA), the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter, Sierra Club Fall of the James Group, Virginia Organizing, and Virginia Interfaith Power and Light are partnering to present Anthony Flaccavento, who will be speaking on "Building Healthy Economies and Communities in the Age of Trump." From the event description: 

"Anthony Flaccavento is an organic farmer and small business owner near Abingdon, Virginia. He has been working on community environmental and economic development in the region and around the nation for the past 30 years. In 1995, he founded Appalachian Sustainable Development (ASD), which became a regional and national leader in sustainable economic development, launching innovative enterprises in food aggregation and distribution, food access for lower income people, sustainable forestry and wood products and more."
