undocuALLY Training for K-12 Teachers

This workshop is intended for educators who work with grades K-12, but is open to all. There are only 5 spaces remaining. 

Saturday, April 22nd 2017, from 9:45am-12pm, at VCU's Oliver Hall (1015 West Main Street, Richmond VA), Richmond Teachers for Social Justice and PLUMAS (Political Latinxs for Movement in Action in Society) are co-hosting an undocyALLY training for K-12th grade educators. The purpose of the workshop is to help teachers learn about the policies and social realities impacting undocumented immigrant students and their families, as well as supports and resources which are available to them. 

Registration is free but limited to the first 25 who complete this form; only 5 spots remain.

The venue is wheelchair accessible via the Harrison Street entrance and has accessible bathrooms. Parking is available on the street and in two garages at 1101 West Cary Street and 801 West Main Street. Max charge of $10/day, accepts cash and cards. 

Community Organizing Power: Fighting for Expanded Sanctuary with ICE Out of RVA

Wednesday, March 22nd 2017, from 7:30-9pm, at the VCU Globe building (830 West Grace Street, Richmond VA), ICE Out of RVA is hosting a talk with Jacinta Gonzales, field director for Mijente. From the event description:

"The current President came into office inheriting a system where 1 in 3 people will be arrested by the age of 23, where nearly 1 in 100 people are currently in jail or prison, and where a Black person is killed by law enforcement or a vigilante every 28 hours on average. The legacy of the failed war on drugs, stop and frisk, and decades of over-policing receives added urgency with the continued practice of utilizing such contact with law enforcement as pretext for additional immigration proceedings and deportation when the person in question may be undocumented or a non-citizen.

"In order to effectively respond to these threats, Cities must both provide undocumented and other non-citizen residents effective protections and safeguards from immigration enforcement, while also reducing the over-policing and criminalization of immigrant communities, Black people, and other people of color, that leads to mass incarceration and deportation."

Free, open to the public. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Parking available on the street and at the West Broad Street parking deck at 1111 West Broad Street.

ICE Out of RVA: City Council Rally/Santuario para Todxs Demostración

Monday, February 13th 2017, from 4:30-5:30pm, at City Hall (900 East Broad Street, Richmond VA), ICE Out of RVA is holding a rally and press conference in support of establishing Richmond as a true sanctuary city. From the event description:

"On Monday, January 30th, over 400 Latinx, Black, Muslim, LGBTQ+ individuals, and allies from Richmond came together to send a message to local, state, and federal government that we, The People, stand together in solidarity and expect elected leaders to craft and support policies that create true Sanctuary Cities for ALL."

VALHEN's Encuentro 2017: latinXchange Conference

Friday, March 3rd 2017, from 9am-6pm, at Virginia Commonwealth University (111 West Broad Street, Richmond VA), the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network (VALHEN) is holding their annual latinXchange conference. From the event description: 

"Join VALHEN for our Encuentro 2017: latinXchange, our annual conference/meeting to highlight and share the issues affecting our Hispanic/Latino communities, to network with outstanding Latinx professionals and college students, and to foster conversations on important educational issues in the Commonwealth."

"Latinx, Black, Muslim, LGBTQ+ individuals, and allies from across Virginia are coming together to send a message to local, state, and federal government that we, The People, stand together in solidarity and expect elected leaders to craft and support policies that create true Sanctuary Cities for ALL.

We are coming together in strength, love and resistance, to create Sanctuary communities where we protect and support each other."

Next Steps with PLUMAS at VCU

Today, November 17th 2016, at 6:30pm in room 1030C of VCU's West Grace North (830 West Grace Street, Richmond VA), PLUMAS (Political Latinxs United for Movement and Action in Society) is holding an event to discuss the outlook for immigration after the election. There will be a presentation on the current realities, changes to be implemented in 2017, and what can be done to prepare. Legal aid will be present to answer specific questions. 

Free, open to the public. The venue is wheelchair accessible.

Undocually Training with PLUMAS (Open to VCU Community Only)

Sunday, November 13th 2016, from 10am-2pm, in Room 2119 of VCU's Harris Hall (1015 Floyd Avenue, Richmond VA), PLUMAS (Political Latinxs United for Movement and Action in Society) is hosting a training for people affiliated with VCU on how to be allies to students who are undocumented immigrants.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided. The venue is wheelchair accessible via the entrances on Main Street and Floyd Avenue. Free, open to VCU staff, faculty, and students only.

Panelists include Dr. Jennifer Bickham-Mendez of William and Mary, Dr. Debra Rodman of Randolph-Macon, and Ms. Carolina Velez of the Wayside Center for Popular Education.
