Educators Only: Art 180 Workshop on Discipline, Justice, and Art

This event is open only to teachers and school counselors (pre-service and in-service) and other school faculty. 

Wednesday, April 12th 2017, from 2-5pm, at VCU's Cabell Library (901 Park Avenue, Richmond VA), VCU's School of Education, ART 180, and Performing Statistics are holding a workshop for educators on school discipline and the school-to-prison pipeline. From the event description: 

"The event brings youth from Richmond’s Juvenile Detention Center into dialogue with participants around the pressing issue of school discipline and the school-to-prison pipeline. Free curricula and other resources will be provided. The workshop has three acts. In Act One, youth, serving as docents, will provide guided tours through a gallery of art that they created to illumine their experiences with school discipline and the criminal justice system. Act Two consists of a dialogue with a panel of educators and counselors, as well as a school resource officer, a legal advocate, and a parent. In Act Three, art educators will introduce Performing Statistics’ digital curriculum that teachers can implement in their classrooms.

The event will conclude with a sharing of resources and next steps for addressing things such as classroom management, school discipline, alternatives to suspension and expulsion, and creating a positive school climate."

"Reparations HOW? Fundraising Training for POC" with the Richmond Reproductive Freedom Project

Monday, January 30th 2017, from 6:30-8pm, at the 3 Moons event space (inquire for address), the Richmond Reproductive Freedom Project, the all-volunteer private abortion fund serving Virginia, will be holding a fundraising training for and by people of color. This event is part of the lead-up to the RRFP's big seasonal fundraiser, the National Abortion Access Bowl-a-thon. The money raised during this time of year goes to helping people in need pay for abortion services, necessary medicines, and childcare and travel costs related to getting the procedure. From the event description: 

"Are you a person of color interested in fundraising, but don't know where to start? Or, have you already been involved with fundraising, but want to pick up more skills? This fundraising training, for and by people of color, digs into how to flex and build fundraising skills in the intersections of reproductive, racial and economic justice."

Free, open to people of color. You must RSVP in order to provide the organizers with an accurate headcount. Food will be provided. Childcare can be provided with three-day notice. Post-Election Meeting for Parents of LGBTQ+ Youth

Wednesday, November 30th 2016, from 6-7:30pm, at Friends of Side by Side (2311 Westwood Avenue, Richmond VA), several local LGBTQ organizations are partnering to hold a meeting for parents of LGBTQ+ youth. From the event description: 

"We have heard from many parents of LGBTQ+ youth that they are feeling particularly nervous, scared, or upset after this year's election season. Friends of Side by Side is partnering with PFLAG Richmond and He She Ze and We to provide a space for parents of LGBTQ+ youth to come and find community, express concern, and connect with new resources."

"The 'B' Is Not Silent: Bisexual+ Support Group" with the Richmond and Tidewater Bisexual/Non-Monosexual Network

Tuesday, November 22nd 2016, from 7-8:30pm, at Diversity Richmond (1407 Sherwood Avenue, Richmond VA), the Richmond and Tidewater Bisexual/Non-Monosexual Network (ROBIN) is holding their first meeting of their confidential bisexual+ support and discussion group. From the event description:

"We are a confidential support and discussion group in Richmond open to anyone who identifies as bisexual, bi-curious or non-monosexual. Our goal is to create a safe and inclusive space for bisexual+ individuals within the Richmond LGBTQIA+ community."

Undocually Training with PLUMAS (Open to VCU Community Only)

Sunday, November 13th 2016, from 10am-2pm, in Room 2119 of VCU's Harris Hall (1015 Floyd Avenue, Richmond VA), PLUMAS (Political Latinxs United for Movement and Action in Society) is hosting a training for people affiliated with VCU on how to be allies to students who are undocumented immigrants.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided. The venue is wheelchair accessible via the entrances on Main Street and Floyd Avenue. Free, open to VCU staff, faculty, and students only.
