Flying Brick Library Housewarming Party

VERY big news, everybody! 

The Flying Brick Library, a left institution in Richmond since the 1990s, is moving from their previous home, a private residence in Oregon Hill, to a public space at Gallery5. They will be sharing the space with the Richmond Independent Zine Library. The housewarming party for the Flying Brick Library will take place Thursday, April 6th 2017, from 7-10pm, at Gallery 5 (200 West Marshall Street, Richmond VA). The evening will feature performances by Jake Mayday and Andrew Alli. 

The Brick has hundreds of books and other media on a wide range of topics, including: class, labor, race, feminism, queer issues, immigration, anarchism, DIY, health, fiction, biography, art, film, religion, travel, psychology, communism, poetry, plays, environmentalism, animal rights, disability issues, economics, urban studies, education, race, and more. Best of all, they'll loan them to you for free. 

Free, open to the public. The venue is wheelchair accessible via a front ramp, and has unisex bathrooms on the first floor. For more info and to RSVP, see this link. 

Benefit Show for the Richmond Independent Zine Library

Saturday, February 11th 2017, from 7pm-2am, at Gallery 5 (200 West Marshall Street, Richmond VA), there will be a benefit show for the Richmond Independent Zine Library, which archives zines, provides a lounge and workspace, and displays a gallery of zine-related art. (Zines are small, self-published xeroxed publications.) The benefit also doubles as a birthday celebration for activists and RIZL staff Dusty and Celina (happy birthday!). 

Featured acts include Ultra Flake, Anousheh, Kuni, and Listless. There will be a dance party with DJs Sha Shakusky and C E L L S A G A. plus zines for sale, a photo booth, glitter shots, tarot readings, and more. 

$5-$25 donations accepted at the door. The venue is wheelchair accessible via a front ramp, and has single-stall, gender-inclusive bathrooms on the first floor.

No DAPL! Black Friday Campaign for Standing Rock

Today, Friday November 25th 2016, from 12-5pm, at Gallery 5 (200 West Marshall Street, Richmond VA), the Richmond Independent Zine Library is holding a letter writing/call in event to pressure public officials to support the Standing Rock water protectors in their fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline. These brave protesters, lead by the Sioux Nation whose land has been stolen to undertake this environmentally disastrous project, have been out in the field for months, and are facing intense violence from local law enforcement and private security. From the event description: 

"Join us in the Richmond Independent Zine Library at Gallery 5 for a letter writing campaign to our representatives and a phone bank to jam the lines and ask that the various agencies who've sent people to attack the Water Protectors bring their people home. This thanksgiving the only thanks should be given to the Water Protectors who are putting their lives and health on the line to stand for what is right. While we may not be able to put our bodies at the Standing Rock Camp or even our money, we can still take action! 

We will have supplies and snacks, but if you have some to share, do contribute! If you're planning to make calls, you will need your own cell phone. Laptops are not required, but if you prefer typing, please feel free to bring your laptop."
