Socialist Social Meet-and-Greet with the Richmond Democratic Socialists of America

Saturday, June 23 2018, from 2-5pm, at the gazebo toward the back of Chimborazo Park (3201 E. Broad St., Richmond VA), the Democratic Socialists of America - Richmond are holding an open meet and greet 'Socialist Social'.

For more info and to RSVP, see the event page. Note that Chimborazo Park prohibits glass containers, alcohol, and companion dogs (except in the designated dog park).

May Day 2017— RVA Schedule

Tomorrow, May 1st, is International Workers Day— happy May Day! Let's see what we've got on the schedule:

From 10:30am-8pm we've got May Day RVA: Creating Sanctuary for ALL/Santuario para Todos at Abner Clay Park (street parking only). Join ALL THE SAINTS THEATER COMPANY, ASH Antifa Seven Hills, Black Rose / Rosa Negra - RVA, No ACP, Democratic Socialists of America - Richmond, the Fight for 15, ICE Out of RVA, ProgressVA, Richmond Struggle, Southerners On New Ground, The Virginia Defender, and the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy for events all day, including an interfaith vigil, art and cultural showcases, and a solidarity march.

From 4-8pm, chow down at the May Day Cookout!

And finally, from 5:30-8:30pm, march or watch the MAY DAY PARADE! International Worker's Day Richmond! , a yearly staple. This one's especially fun for the kids (though the really little ones might benefit from ear protection, since it's often very loud!).

Celebration of the Life of Commandante Fidel Castro

Saturday, January 28th 2017, from 4-6pm, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church (1720 Mechanicsville Turnpike, Richmond VA), the African Awareness Association and the All-African People's Revolutionary Party (GC) are holding a tribute to Cuban leader Fidel Castro (August 13th, 1926 – November 25th, 2016). Free, open to the public.

Black Panther Party for Self Defense 50th Anniversary

Yesterday, October 15th 2016, was the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. 

Established in Oakland, California by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, the BPP was a Marxist Black liberation organization. They fought against the overt violence of racist cops and the covert brutality of poverty, hunger, and degradation. They established survival programs to do the work the government wouldn’t, worked to oppose American imperialism abroad, published a newspaper, and agitated for their Ten Point Plan which ended “We want land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice and peace!”

The FBI targeted the Panthers under the COINTELPRO program, subjecting them to surveillance, infiltration, perjury, harassment, smear campaigns, and assassinations. Despite fighting valiantly, the party was dissolved in 1982.
