The Elegba Folklore Society is holding a Juneteenth event today, Sunday June 18th 2017, from 4-6pm at the African Burial Ground (16th and East Broad Street, Richmond VA). From the event description:
"Let the rituals of the Motherland refresh you and open spirit as we say “thank you” to our ancestors. We pay homage in ceremony, drumming and song. Bring an offering for the altar. Wear white or African attire as you have it."

LGBTQ Town Hall: Honoring Community Members Lost with Action
Today, from 2-4pm, at Diversity Richmond (1407 Sherwood Avenue, Richmond VA), there will be an LGBTQ Town Hall as part of the Honor Them With Action national campaign to honor the victims of the June 12th 2016 PULSE nightclub shooting and the 12 transwomen who have been taken from us by murder since January. Speakers will include community members and representatives of local police departments.
Speakers will include: Kayla Hicks, director of African American and Community Outreach for the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence; Dawn M. Adams, candidate for Virginia House District 68; Trenton Morris, the legislative chair for GLSEN Richmond; Debra Rodman, professor at Randolph Macon and consultant on cases for LGBTQ asylum seekers; Erykah Christian, an African American trans woman and core volunteer for the Nationz Foundation; Angel Ramirez, a Latino transman and veteran; James Milner, president of VA Pride; Captain Linda Toney of the Henrico Police Department; Corporal Elliott Anderson of the Chesterfield Police Department; and Captains Latham and Duke of the Henrico Sheriff's Office.

Jet Trails Media presents: a Benefit for Girls Rock! RVA, with Toxic Moxie and more
Saturday, June 24th 2017, from 8pm-1:30am, at the Camel (1621 West Broad Street, Richmond VA), Jet Trails Media is holding a benefit show for Girls Rock! RVA, an annual summer musical camp to empower girls and gender nonconforming youth. In preparation for launching year-round programming such as afterschool programs, music lessons, and practice spaces, Girls Rock! will not be holding a camp this year. To help prepare for the effort, JTM is holding a celebration of women and gender non-conforming musicians to benefit Girls Rock!, featuring Toxic Moxie, Sammi Lanzetta, The Smirks, the and Private Cry.

SONG June Campaign Meeting
This Thursday, June 22nd 2017, from 5-7pm, at the Legal Aid Justice Center (123 East Broad Street, Richmond VA), the Richmond chapter of Southerners On New Ground (SONG) and the Advancement Project is holding a meeting for the Free from Fear campaign. Originally launched in Durham, NC in 2015, the Free from Fear campaign is working nationwide against the racial profiling and state violence endured by communities of color at the hands of police and immigration officials.
Here in Richmond, our local chapter of SONG is working to institute a Community Review Board to oversee the police. Learn more at the meeting.

Projekt A: a Film Screening and Discussion on Mutual Aid
This Wednesday, June 21st 2017, from 8-10pm, at Lamplighter Coffee Roasters (116 South Addison Street, Richmond VA), the new FB page for organizing left events in Richmond, This is Not a Page, will be holding a screening and discussion on the German documentary "Projekt A." The documentary is about radical mutual aid projects by anarchists across Europe. The talk, titled "Mutual Aid: New Bonds, New Revolts," will focus on strategies we can apply to our own communities for radical mutual aid, building autonomy and resistance from where we stand.

Miss Major's Monthly Giving Circle
Let's show some love to one of our cherished elders this pride month (and every month, but I'm posting it now). See this link to donate to a fundraiser to help secure shelter, food, and medical care for Miss Major.
"Miss Major has fought tirelessly for justice and freedom from the Stonewall Riots in 1969 to her role as Executive Director of the Transgender, Gender Variant, and Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP) in San Francisco since 2006. As a black, formerly incarcerated transgender leader, mother, and grandmother, Major has paved the way for us to be who and where we are today. This Major Love Monthly Giving Circle was initiated two years ago due to the difficulties of aging, rising medical costs, and budget cuts in 2012/3 to TGIJP that left Miss Major without an income. The giving circle had a powerful revival about a year ago, when Miss Major's apartment caught fire and almost all of her personal belongings were severely damaged. Thankfully, she and her pooch Moose were unharmed."

Tomorrow, Monday June 5th 2017, at 5:30pm, at the Richmond City Jail (1701 Fairfield Way, Richmond VA), ICE Out of RVA is convening a demonstration to demand an end to cooperation between the Richmond Sheriff's Department and the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
What happens when local authorities cooperate with ICE? Things like this: Delmy, a Richmond resident for 2 years who's lived in the US for 14 years and never been charged with a crime, was arrested recently for a minor crime with little evidence. As she was being released after paying bond, a Richmond jail employee turned her over to ICE, and now she faces deportation. You can read more details in the event page, but the gist is:
The immigration system is broken. Cooperating with ICE doesn't fix that system, it just exposes people subject to a broken system to inhumane conditions.
