Rally Against the Muslim Ban

Monday, May 8th 2017, from 1-5pm, at the U.S. Court of Appeals 4th Circuit (1100 East Main Street, Richmond VA), a large coalition of organizations are rallying to protest Donald Trump's second proposed travel ban. The rally is part of the #NoMuslimBanEver National Week of Resistance and #AAPIsResist Month of Action.

Background: on March 16th 2017, the Trump administration issued Executive Order 13780, "Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States." This order was intended to replace and answer legal challenges against Executive Order 13769. Both executive orders are designed to prevent Muslim immigrants, refugees, and visitors from traveling to the United States. Because implementing a religious test for entry into the country is unconstitutional, the Trump administration predicated the ban on national origin instead, excluding travelers from six Muslim-majority countries: Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The order also suspends admission of refugees for 90 days. Preventing Muslim people from entering the country was part of Donald Trump's electoral platform.

Upon issuing this second Muslim ban, several legal challenges arose. On May 8th, the 4th Circuit will hear arguments in the case of International Refugee Assistance Project v. Trump
